How CBD can support us in challenging times of COVID-19

The current COVID-19 crisis makes a balanced body and minds more important than ever.
During the current health and economic turmoil caused by COVID-19, many of us are facing a challenging situation filled with uncertainties and fears about our health and the health of our beloved ones. In addition, we are either overwhelmed from the new task of home-schooling combined with home-office or feeling rather lonely without the company of our colleagues and friends. In such difficult times, it is especially important for our bodies and minds to be in balance. Balance in the sense of having a strong immune system, getting enough restorative sleep and limiting the damaging effect of emotional stress and anxiety for our mental and physical wellbeing.
A well-functioning Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is key for restoring and maintaining health and wellbeing
Our Endocannabinoid System (ECS) serves as a general protective mechanism, starting at the cellular level, proceeding to the tissues, organs and our mental and emotional well-being. The Endocannabinoid System encompasses the brain, the endocrine (hormonal), and the immune system, hence everything that matters for good health and a sense of wellbeing.
You can think of the ECS as the master system that is turned on when the cellular homeostasis is out of balance. It is the first line of defense to go off, activating all other mechanisms that need to return to homeostasis as soon as possible.
Our ECS consists of:
- Cannabinoid receptors (e.g., CB1, CB2), which are present on most of our cells
- Endocannabinoids (the signaling molecules that we humans produce and that bind to the receptors)
- Enzymes that our body produces to create and degrade the Endocannabinoids.
Cannabinoids such as CBD from the Hemp plant can help us to strengthen our Endocannabinoid System and address many of our health and wellbeing issues
Luckily, humans (and all other mammals) have had a close friend in their evolution – the Cannabis plant. Cannabis is the plant that produces most Phytocannabinoids, meaning Cannabinoids that are able to interact with our ECS. The hemp plant is a Cannabis species that is especially rich in CBD (Cannabidiol) while having a low concentration of THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), the cannabinoid that can make us feel high when consumed in higher doses.
As we can see in the table below the ECS can help us with many of the most important health and wellbeing issues that might affect us in these challenging times of the global Corona Virus outbreak.

To summarize, the proper functioning of this balancing effect of our ECS is key in these difficult times to keep our bodies and minds healthy. Adding hemp-based Cannabinoids to our diet might give our ECS a needed boost and ensure it can do its job well.
